They put on their face coverings. They washed their hands more. They stayed 6 feet apart. As of Saturday, the county was reporting 2, confirmed cases and 46 deaths since the start of the pandemic. But without all the precautions, those numbers would have been much worse, according to health officials. But here in Larimer County our rate and our deaths are a lot less.

While the coronavirus pandemic has been front and center, Larimer County Department of Health and Environment staff members have continued their other roles as well. And while the county has made it through six months of the virus, there is still more to come. Gonzales has pointed out that the flu pandemic lasted 18 months.

He said the fall weather could lead to a spike in cases because respiratory droplets spread farther in cooler, dryer weather. And looking ahead to when a vaccine is available, the Health Department will be looking at how to administer the vaccine as quickly as possible and who will be at top priority for the first doses. Gonzales, who loves his role as a youth basketball coach, said he wants things to get back to normal as much as the next person.

The risk is still there. The district later extended the closure of schools through the rest of the school year, moving to remote learning. March A public health order closed bars, restaurants, gyms and theaters and limited gatherings to under 50 people.

Those businesses have been able to reopen at different times and capacities. March Gonzales issued a stay-at-home order for Larimer County, which was extended through April Facilities have been converted and are ready to open, but have not been needed. Some of the beds were used to house wildland firefighters during a September cold snap during the Cameron Peak Fire, but no patients have been housed at the facility.

May Larimer County announces that it received a variance from the state to reopen more businesses at higher capacities. Instead, we need to employ new approaches to address a new situation. We need everyone to pull together and ask their family, friends, co-workers, clients, and customers to get vaccinated and to mask up, at least temporarily.

However, we need to act based on the best science available. This includes the swift implementation of multiple prevention strategies, including vaccination, without imposing additional restrictions, if possible. I ask that you join me in acting on these so we can:. We need everyone who is eligible and has not yet been vaccinated to roll up your sleeve and get vaccinated.

To help those on the fence, we need getting vaccinated to be the easy choice. Getting vaccinated today is the tool to return to all normal activities and protect others and our economy. Wearing a mask indoors reduces the spread of the virus while we work to achieve higher levels of community immunity.

These are simple actions that, when taken by most of us, will keep kids learning in their classrooms, free up hospital beds, and prevent the needless loss of any more Larimer County residents to this now preventable disease. This work has already begun. Businesses are advertising that their employees are vaccinated. Others are requiring vaccination for entry into movies and concerts.
