Cech, the former Chelsea, Arsenal and Czech Republic international goalkeeper, is the best known exemplar of a shot-stopper who wore a protective helmet, which he began to do in the latter part of his career after sustaining a serious head injury.
Cech was seriously injured during a Premier League game in when he was caught in the head by Reading striker Stephen Hunt. Cech had a serious head fracture and had to have brain surgery afterwards. Quick-thinking doctors gave him oxygen after the incident, treatment that possibly saved his life. Kurto, who also suffered two concussions during the season when he was playing for Rudan at Wellington Phoenix, has not hurt himself in the way Cech did. But his coach is concerned that the cumulative effects of head knocks could have had an impact and that is why he wants him to wear a helmet from now on.
